In the 2022-2023 Budget, Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Legislature allocated significant funding to help thousands of working Californians achieve their dream of home ownership. In addition to the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, the California Building Industry Association, Habitat for Humanity California and other leading housing advocacy organizations are praising the funds.
It does so by investing substantially in the state's CalHome program and by providing down payment assistance through California Dream for All. These initiatives, which are desperately needed, will create affordable homeownership housing and assist working families in obtaining their first mortgages.
The Coalition issued the following statement:
In the 2022-2023 state budget, California's pro-homeownership provisions are supported by the California Homeownership Coalition, which is grateful to Gov. Newsom and the California Legislature for their efforts. As a result of these housing budget items, more hard-working families are able to afford to buy a home and they are able to become homeowners, which brings with it a number of advantages. In particular, communities of color, who have suffered from decades of discriminatory housing practices, can benefit from these policy changes because they will create true housing security, better health outcomes, and strides forward in education, as well as a generational legacy of wealth-building.
It is especially pleasing to see $250 million allocated to CalHome, which is directly responsible for increasing the supply of affordable ownership housing. In addition, Toni Atkins has proposed $500 million for her California Dream for All Program, which will improve opportunities for working families to become homeowners. In order to enable traditionally underserved communities to build generational wealth that has long been out of reach, we need to support them.
It is important to implement these programs to address California's severe housing affordability and equity problems."
