Two words end more offers on pre-war houses than dry rot, cracked slabs, and knob-and-tube combined. Lead. Asbestos.
They deserve respect. They do not deserve panic. Millions of people live safely in houses that contain both, and the difference between safe and unsafe is almost entirely about how the material is handled rather than whether it exists.

Why older houses have this at all
Lead was in paint because it made paint durable, and it stayed in the supply chain for decades. Asbestos was in building products because it was fireproof, cheap, and stable, and it turned up in far more places than people expect.

Removal is not always the answer
Homeowners often assume the goal is to get every trace out of the house. Frequently the recommended approach is management rather than removal: encapsulate, enclose, repair damaged areas, and control the conditions that would disturb the material.
Removal creates exposure risk in the process, which is exactly why it is regulated work with containment, disposal, and clearance requirements. A professional will tell you when removal is the right call and when it is an expensive way to create a hazard you did not have yesterday.
What this means for a renovation plan
Bring the assessment forward in your sequence. Not after design, not after permits, not the morning demolition starts.
The order that works looks like this. Understand the house. Assess for hazardous materials. Design around what you learned. Then approvals, then contractors, then demolition. Slotting the assessment early is cheap; discovering the problem mid-project is what blows up schedules.

Do not sand, scrape, or dry-strip old painted exteriors to make the house show better. That is the single worst pre-listing decision available on a house of this age, and it can convert a managed condition into a live one.
Disclose what you know, honestly and in writing. A buyer who learns something from a disclosure usually keeps going. A buyer who discovers it after closing calls a lawyer.
Living with it
Ordinary maintenance habits matter more than any single project. Keep painted surfaces intact rather than peeling. Fix water problems fast, because water damage is what turns stable material into damaged material. Wet-clean rather than dry-sweep in older areas. And when in doubt, do not disturb it yourself.
Old houses are not dangerous by default. They become dangerous when someone with a sander and good intentions treats a 1920s exterior like a 2005 one.
