When a Claremont Move Slips a Day

A move slips for a small number of reasons and they are all outside your control: a closing that does not record in time, a truck that breaks down, a crew that is delayed on the job before yours, a storm, an association that will not admit the truck on the day you booked.

The households that handle it well are not luckier. They decided what a slip would mean before it happened, so the day it happens they are executing a plan rather than inventing one.

Decide the fallback while it is still hypothetical

At the point you book the mover, ask two questions and write the answers down.

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE CANNOT DELIVER ON THE SCHEDULED DAY? The realistic answers are overnight on the truck, short-term storage, or a redelivery on the next available date, which may not be tomorrow.

WHAT DOES EACH OF THOSE COST? A company with clear answers is a company that has done it before.

Then decide where the household sleeps if the new address is not available, and where the essentials are. That is what the do-not-load box is for, and it is why it travels in your own vehicle rather than on the truck.

The first hour: find out what actually slipped

The instinct is to start calling everybody. Do the opposite: establish the fact first, from the person who actually knows, before you propagate it.

If it is the transaction, that is your escrow officer or agent, and the question is specific: is this a delay of hours or of days, and what has to happen for it to clear.

If it is the mover, ask for a revised time and a revised DATE, and ask what the load's status is: still at the old address, on the truck, or in transit. Those are three very different situations.

Then work out who is affected, in order

Call in this sequence, because each call changes the next.

The mover, to establish what is possible. The other side of the transaction, because their plans are the mirror image of yours and they may be more flexible than you expect. Anyone with a hard commitment: a rental truck return, a cleaner, a childcare arrangement, a utility appointment, a flight.

Then the soft commitments: friends helping, deliveries scheduled, the association if a move window was reserved. The load's location decides your options

NOTHING LOADED YET. The easiest case. Stand the crew down if you can do so without penalty, and keep packing. A day of unexpected preparation time is not a disaster.

LOADED, NOWHERE TO GO. The hard case, and the one the fallback exists for. Overnight on the truck if the mover offers it and the security arrangements are acceptable, or short-term storage, which means the load is handled twice and you should ask what that does to liability.

Utilities, keys, and the paperwork

Push the utility STOP at the old address back rather than leaving it. Being without power in a house you are still occupying is a self-inflicted problem, and a stop date is usually easy to move.

Leave the utility START at the new address where it is. An empty house with the lights on costs very little; an unloading crew in a dark house is expensive.

Keep every key, remote, and fob until the situation resolves, and confirm in writing with the other side that you have them and why.

Get it in writing, calmly

Whatever new arrangement is agreed — a revised date, a storage arrangement, a fee waived or charged — confirm it by email the same day. Not as a threat, simply as a record. Days that slip tend to be days when several people remember different things.

Then stop

Once the calls are made and the plan is set, there is genuinely nothing further to do, and the temptation to keep working the problem is where exhaustion comes from.

Eat properly, sleep somewhere comfortable, and treat the extra day as an extra day. Most slips resolve within one. The households that arrive rested and a day late do better than the ones that arrive on time and wrecked.

The short version

Ask the fallback question when you book, not when you need it. Establish the actual fact before making a single other call. Work the list in order of who is hardest to reschedule.
