  • Detection that calls for help. Smoke and carbon monoxide detection that notifies a family member as well as sounding locally means a household member who cannot easily reach an alarm is not the only line of defense. Everything on that list works whether or not anybody touches a phone. That is not a coincidence — it is the selection criterion.

Monitoring, consent, and the thing families get wrong

This is where good intentions cause real harm. Interior cameras and listening devices installed by a family member in a competent adult's home are not a technical decision; they are a consent decision, and they belong to the person who lives there.

Two hard points. First, an adult who has not agreed to being recorded in their own home should not be recorded, and discovering hidden monitoring damages trust in a way that is difficult to repair. Second, California law requires the consent of all parties to record a confidential communication, which makes covert AUDIO monitoring a legal question and not merely an ethical one. Video and audio are treated differently, and audio is the sharper constraint. The workable version is usually passive rather than observational: sensors that report that the coffee maker ran and the bathroom door opened, rather than a camera watching a living room. Set it up so it survives the setup person

The most common failure of a well-intentioned installation is that it was configured by one relative, tied to that relative's account, and became unusable the moment they were unavailable.

Prevent it deliberately. Use an account that belongs to the HOMEOWNER, with family members added as members rather than as owners. Write down what is installed, where the hub lives, and how to disable each thing — a device nobody can turn off is a device that will eventually be unplugged in frustration. Keep the manual path working: physical switches, a physical key, a phone that does not depend on the network. And prefer devices that fail safe rather than fail closed, since a lock that cannot be operated when a battery dies is a hazard rather than a convenience.

When the house is eventually sold

Homes in this situation are often sold later by a family member or a trustee rather than by the original owner, and by then nobody remembers which account controls what. That is a solvable problem if the notes exist and a genuinely tedious one if they do not.
