Most connected houses are designed for a good day. Power on, network up, everything responding. The design question worth asking is the opposite one: what does this house do on the afternoon when the power is out, the internet is down, or both?
In this part of Southern California that afternoon is not hypothetical. Heat events, wind events, utility work, and the occasional public safety shutoff all produce it. A house that becomes unusable during one is not a smart house. It is a fragile one.
Two different failures, often confused
A POWER outage and an INTERNET outage break different things, and the distinction matters when planning.
Power out: everything hardwired stops. Lights, hardwired cameras, the router, the hub, powered locks, gates, and garage openers. Battery devices keep running but often cannot reach anything, because the router that carried their traffic has no power either.
Internet out with power on: local devices keep working, but anything cloud-dependent stops responding. Remote access is gone, notifications stop, and voice assistants become mute even for commands about a light in the same room.
The second failure surprises people more, because everything looks alive. The lights are on, the speaker's ring glows, and nothing does what it is told.
The list that actually matters
Work through these categories for a specific house. This takes an evening and is worth far more than another device.
ENTRY. Can every exterior door be opened without power and without the network, from both sides? A powered lock with a physical key override passes. A keypad-only lock with a dead battery and no key does not. Check the batteries in every powered lock on a schedule, not when they warn you.
GARAGE AND GATES. A powered opener with no accessible manual release is a car trapped in a garage. Know where the release is, confirm it works, and confirm anyone who might need it knows too. LIGHT. Smart bulbs in a fixture controlled by a smart switch create the classic trap: someone turns the switch off, the bulb loses power, and now the app cannot reach it. Design lighting so that the WALL always wins, and keep at least one path to light in every hallway that does not require a phone.
LIFE SAFETY. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are the category where nothing may be conditional. California's requirements exist regardless of what else is installed, and connected models must still function as alarms without a network. WATER. An automatic shutoff valve on a battery backup is one of the few devices that is more valuable during an outage than outside one, because a leak while the house is dark and the alerts are down is the expensive scenario. Confirm whether yours holds its function on backup power.
HEAT AND COOLING. A thermostat with battery backup keeps its settings but cannot run equipment without power. Know which rooms stay tolerable and which do not; on an inland heat day, that is a real household planning question.
Backup power, and being honest about what it covers
A small uninterruptible supply on the router and hub is the cheapest meaningful step. It keeps the network alive for a short window, which is often enough to keep alerts flowing and to check cameras while the utility restores service.

Middle layer: things that work with power but no internet. Local automations, wired cameras recording locally, a hub running its rules offline.
Top layer: things that need everything. Remote access, notifications, voice control, cloud recording.
A house built this way degrades gracefully. Each layer failing costs convenience rather than function. A house built the other way - where the only path to a light or a door runs through the top layer - fails all at once, and it does it on the worst afternoon of the year.
What to tell a buyer
If the house depends on technology in ways that are not obvious, say so. Which doors have no key. Where the garage release is. Whether the gate can be opened by hand and how. This is not a legal formality; it is the information a new owner needs on their first outage, and handing it over in writing takes ten minutes.
