An electric bill is a single number describing a month. It tells you that something in the house used power. It does not tell you what, when, or whether it should have.
Energy monitoring closes that gap. In an older Claremont house - where the equipment spans several decades and nobody alive remembers what the previous owner installed - it is one of the few connected devices that produces information the owner could not otherwise get.
It is also a diagnostic tool rather than a savings device, and the difference is worth being clear about before buying one.
The two kinds, and what each shows
WHOLE-HOME monitors clamp onto the main feed at the panel and report total consumption in near real time. Many attempt to identify individual appliances by their electrical signature. That identification ranges from impressive to comic depending on the house; treat it as a hint, not a fact.
CIRCUIT-LEVEL monitors put a sensor on individual breakers. This costs more and requires more room in the panel, and it is dramatically more useful, because it answers questions instead of suggesting them. The air conditioner circuit, the pool pump circuit, the kitchen, the garage - each becomes its own line.
Both live inside the electrical panel and are installed by a licensed electrician. This is not a homeowner project, and older panels sometimes have a second problem: no room. What it finds in an older house
The findings repeat across houses of a certain age, and none of them are exotic.
EQUIPMENT RUNNING WHEN IT SHOULD NOT. A pool pump on a schedule nobody has revisited. A circulating pump running continuously. Landscape lighting on all night in summer. Each is invisible in a monthly bill and obvious in an hourly chart.
AN AGING SYSTEM WORKING HARDER. Cooling equipment that runs longer for the same result is the most valuable early warning a monitor produces. It does not diagnose the cause - low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, a dirty coil, or leaking ducts all look similar from the panel - but it tells you to have someone look before a July failure.
A SECOND REFRIGERATOR IN THE GARAGE. Usually old, usually running in a hot space, usually holding condiments. This is close to a cliche because it is close to universal.
PHANTOM DRAW. Real, but usually smaller than people expect and rarely worth reorganizing a household over. The monitor is more useful for finding one large mistake than fifty small ones.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether the house is well insulated, only that the equipment ran. It cannot distinguish a duct problem from an equipment problem. It cannot tell you what your bill will be, because rates, plans, and time-of-use structures are the utility's domain and change independently of your house - check current details with your provider rather than relying on any device's estimate.
It also cannot make a decision. A monitor that shows the cooling system running long hours is an input to a conversation with an HVAC contractor, not a substitute for one.
Solar, batteries, and the reason people install these
Houses with solar or battery storage are the most common place these monitors turn up, because the questions get more complicated: what the array produced, what the house consumed, what went to the battery, what went to the grid. Manufacturer apps report some of that; an independent monitor reports it in one place and keeps reporting after a warranty or a service relationship ends.

Acting on what you find
The sequence that works: monitor for a full billing cycle before changing anything, so you have a baseline across a weekend and a work week. Then fix the largest single thing. Then re-measure.
Most owners find one or two genuine problems and a long tail of noise. Chasing the tail is where enthusiasm goes to die. Fixing the pool schedule and the garage refrigerator is usually the whole project.
One habit is worth keeping after the initial cleanup: glance at the chart when a season turns. Cooling equipment behaves differently in the first genuinely hot week than it did in June, and a system that has quietly degraded over a winter shows the change there before it shows it in the house. That is the whole ongoing value of the device - not daily attention, but a place to look when something feels off.
At a sale
A monitor installed in the panel is wired equipment and stays with the house. The DATA does not automatically follow it, and the account has to be released like any other - the mechanics are in the conveyance guide.
One caution worth stating. Energy data is behavioral data: it shows when a house is occupied, when people wake, and when nobody is home. Handing a buyer historical data is generous; handing it to anyone else is a privacy decision, not a technical one.
The genuinely useful handover is smaller and better: a note saying what the monitor watches, which circuits are labeled, and what it has flagged. A buyer inheriting a house with a documented note that the cooling system has been running long since spring has been given something real.
