Most smart-home advice assumes the person installing the device is the person living with it. A large share of real installations are not like that. An adult child sets up a camera at a parent's house. A family member adds sensors to a home they visit on Sundays. Someone buys a voice speaker for a relative who has never asked for one and does not particularly want one.
This is its own problem, and it is mostly not a technical problem. It is a consent problem, a usability problem and an alert-routing problem, in that order. This article covers the version of it that comes up constantly in Claremont households, where a long-held family home and a resident who has lived in it for decades are the normal case rather than the exception. Start with consent, and make it real consent
The instinct is to install first and explain later, because explaining is hard and the person may say no. Resist it. A device installed without agreement is discovered eventually, and the discovery costs far more trust than the conversation would have.
The conversation that works is specific rather than general. Not are you comfortable with a camera, which invites a reflexive no, but this camera would face the front porch, it would tell me when a package arrives and when someone knocks, and it would not face any room inside the house. Specificity is what turns a vague sense of being watched into a bounded, checkable arrangement.
Two hard lines are worth stating out loud in that conversation.
FIRST, INTERIOR CAMERAS ARE A DIFFERENT CATEGORY ENTIRELY. A porch camera is a doorbell. A camera in a living room is monitoring a person's daily life. If it goes in at all, it goes in with explicit agreement, with a physical way to disable it, and with a clear statement of who can view it and when.
SECOND, MICROPHONES. CALIFORNIA IS A TWO-PARTY CONSENT STATE for recording confidential communications, and a device with an always-listening microphone in a room where a resident talks to visitors, to caregivers, to a doctor on the phone, is not a neutral object. Everyone in the household needs to know it is there, and the microphone should default off on anything that does not require it. Where the house is later listed, the same rule applies to buyers walking through: disclose or disarm, and there is no third option.
Build for the person who will use it, not the person who installed it
The most common failure is not a device that breaks. It is a device that works exactly as designed and is never used, because the person it was installed for cannot or will not operate it.
Design rules that hold up:
- THE PHYSICAL CONTROL MUST STILL WORK. A smart bulb that requires the wall switch to stay on is a trap the first time someone flips that switch out of forty years of habit. A lock that cannot be opened with a key is worse. Every device should degrade to something a person can operate with their hands and no phone.
- NO REQUIRED APP FOR DAILY LIFE. If turning on a lamp requires unlocking a phone, finding an app and waiting for it to connect, the lamp has been made worse. The app is for the person managing the system remotely. The house is for the person living in it.
- ONE ECOSYSTEM, NOT FOUR. Mixed platforms mean mixed apps, mixed failure modes and a support call you cannot resolve over the phone. Pick a stack and stay in it -- the reasoning is in picking a stack you can hand over.
- LABEL EVERYTHING PHYSICALLY. A small label on the hub, on the sensor, on the plug. When something goes wrong and you are forty minutes away on the phone, the ability to say the white box on the bookshelf is the whole difference between a fix and a service call.
- NOTHING CRITICAL ON A SUBSCRIPTION NOBODY IS WATCHING. If a card expires and a service lapses, you want that to cost a notification history, not a life-safety function.
Alerts: decide who gets them before you install anything
An alert that goes to nobody is decoration. An alert that goes to everybody gets ignored by everybody. Alert routing is the design decision that determines whether the system does anything at all, and it should be settled before the first device is mounted.
Work through three questions. WHO is the primary responder, meaning one named person whose phone the alert reaches. WHAT is the escalation if that person does not respond, meaning a second person, or a neighbor who can physically get to the house. And WHICH alerts are worth waking someone for, because a system that reports every motion event trains its audience to swipe everything away, including the one that mattered.
Keep the noisy categories separate from the serious ones. Package deliveries and porch motion do not belong in the same notification channel as a water leak or a smoke alarm.
The devices that actually justify themselves here
Ranked by how much they help relative to how little they intrude:
- LEAK SENSORS. Passive, invisible, no behavior change required, and they address the most common expensive failure in an older house. The best first device in this whole category.
- SMOKE AND CO DETECTION with remote notification. Life-safety devices are governed by current California requirements and local code, and the City of Claremont building department and the current statute are the authorities on what a given house needs. A connected detector is an addition to that requirement, never a substitute for it.
- A DOORBELL CAMERA at the front door. Low intrusion, high practical value, and it answers the door-knock question that worries families most.

It matters at sale in the same way it matters at any other transition. Devices that are mounted and wired generally stay with the house; the accounts do not, and they need resetting and removing from the installer's login before the property changes hands. If the account belongs to a family member rather than the resident, say so early, because that is exactly the arrangement that gets discovered at the worst moment.
