Can an Ambulance Reach You on a Crowded Saturday?

Of everything a busy weekend does to a residential block, this is the one that actually matters, and it is the one nobody asks about.

Parking pressure is an inconvenience. Noise is a preference. Access for an emergency vehicle is a different category of question, and it is answerable on foot in about fifteen minutes.

This is not an argument that any particular street is unsafe. It is an argument that access is a physical property of a block, that it changes under load, and that a buyer is entitled to understand it before rather than after.

Bigger than most people picture. A fire apparatus is long, wide, tall and heavy, and its requirements are geometric rather than negotiable.

None of that is unusual or alarming; it is the normal condition of any town that hosts things. The point is that it is a KNOWN condition, that agencies plan around it, and that a homeowner can understand where their own address sits relative to it.

What you can check yourself

Measure the pinch point. Walk the block and find the narrowest effective width with cars parked as they normally are. There is always one spot narrower than the rest.

Look at the corners. Are the intersections kept clear, by marking, by red curb, or by convention? Corner clearance is the single most commonly ignored restriction and the one that most directly affects a large vehicle.

Find the turnaround. On a dead end, look at the bulb. Is it sized for something large? Is it usually occupied by parked cars?

Locate the hydrants. Note where they are and whether the curb in front of them is respected.

Check the numbering. Stand in the street at night and see whether you can read the address from a moving vehicle's perspective. This one is entirely within your control to fix, and it is the cheapest improvement on this list.
