Claremont lots are often deep, and the back of a deep lot is where the office, the studio, the workshop, or the accessory dwelling unit ends up. Then someone tries to hold a video call out there and discovers that a router in the middle of a plaster-walled house does not reach a detached building eighty feet away through a stucco wall and a hedge.
This is a solvable problem with three real approaches, and the right one depends less on technology than on whether a trench is going to happen anyway.
The three approaches
WIRELESS EXTENSION is the least invasive. A mesh node or an outdoor access point positioned with line of sight to the structure, or a dedicated point-to-point bridge between two small antennas. The bridge version is genuinely capable across a residential yard when the two ends can see each other, and it needs power at both ends but no trench. Its weakness is exactly that condition: mature trees, a garage in the way, or a wall between the buildings degrade it, and Claremont's canopy is a real obstruction. BURIED ETHERNET is the traditional answer and still the best value if the ground is already open. Direct-burial rated cable in conduit, terminated at both ends. It is reliable, it carries power to a device at the far end where supported, and it lasts.
BURIED FIBER is what to run when the distance is long, when the two buildings are on different electrical services, or when you want to remove electrical concerns from the link entirely. Fiber carries no current, which is the point.
The detail that decides between copper and fiber
Copper running between two structures creates an electrical path between them. Where the buildings are on the same service and properly bonded, that is normally handled. Where they are separately fed, where there is any question about grounding, or where a surge event could travel the cable, it is a real concern, and it is a question for a licensed electrician and current code rather than for a forum post.
Fiber sidesteps the whole discussion. If a permitted ADU with its own subpanel is going in at the back of the lot, running fiber in the same trench costs very little relative to the rest of the project and removes a category of problem permanently. That is the recommendation worth remembering: WHEN THE TRENCH IS OPEN, OVERBUILD IT.
Do the boring things while the ground is open
Run conduit, not bare cable. Conduit means the next cable can be pulled without digging again, and there is always a next cable.
Run a pull string in the conduit and leave it there.
Oversize the conduit. The cost difference is trivial and the regret is not.
Run more than one cable if copper. Two runs cost slightly more than one and give you a spare when a termination fails or a device wants a dedicated line.
Photograph the trench before it is covered, with a tape measure in frame. This is the single most valuable document a property can have about its own underground, and almost nobody does it.
ADU specifics
An accessory dwelling unit is a dwelling, which changes the framing. Its network may need to be genuinely separate rather than an extension of the main house, particularly if it will be rented. That means its own logical network at minimum, so that a tenant is not sharing a network with the owner's household devices - and so the owner's cameras, locks, and files are not on the same segment as a tenant's laptop.

Permits and code apply to the ADU's electrical and structural work, and low-voltage cabling has its own requirements. Verify current requirements with the City of Claremont building department rather than assuming; the standards for accessory dwellings in particular have moved repeatedly in recent years.
Power at the far end
Whatever the link, the far building needs powered equipment - an access point, a switch, or a bridge. Where a single cable can carry both data and power to a device, that is the tidy answer and it means one thing to install instead of two. Where it cannot, there needs to be an outlet in the right place, which is easier to arrange during construction than after.
Also think about the outage case. A detached office loses its network when the main house loses power even if the office has its own circuit, because the equipment feeding it sits in the house. What it means at a sale
Buried conduit and cabling are part of the property and stay. That makes them worth DOCUMENTING, because an undocumented conduit is worth much less than a documented one - nobody digs looking for something they do not know exists.
Hand over: where the conduit runs and how deep, what is in it, where it terminates at both ends, and the photographs from the trench. For a buyer evaluating a property with a back structure, this is a specific thing to ask about, and it belongs in the same review as everything else in the pre-purchase tech inspection walkthrough.
A back building with real network to it is a working office, a rentable unit, or a studio. Without it, it is a shed with good intentions. The difference is often one trench.
