Whole-House Audio in an Older Claremont Home

Running multiroom audio through plaster and lath in Claremont: wired versus wireless, what it does to walls, and what conveys at closing.

Multiroom audio is the one smart-home category that used to require a contractor and a wall opened in every room. It does not any more, which is good news for a housing stock where opening a wall is rarely a casual decision. It is also the category where the wired version is still genuinely better, which makes the choice a real one rather than a foregone conclusion.

This article works through both paths for an older Claremont house: what wireless speakers actually solve, when running cable is worth the disruption, what plaster and lath do to the plan, and how any of it is handled when the house sells. It extends the smart-home guide.

The wireless path, which is right for most houses

Self-contained powered speakers on the network, one per room, grouped in software. No cable, no wall work, no permit, and the whole system leaves with you if you move.

What it genuinely solves: coverage without construction, incremental purchase, and the ability to test whether you actually want music in the guest room before committing money to it. Most households discover they want audio in three rooms rather than nine, and the wireless path is the only one that lets you find that out cheaply.

What it costs you, honestly:

  • EVERY SPEAKER NEEDS AN OUTLET. In an older house this is a real constraint. Rooms with two outlets total, both behind furniture, do not welcome a speaker on a bookshelf without a visible cord running somewhere.
  • EVERY SPEAKER NEEDS NETWORK. A speaker in the detached garage or the back bedroom is exactly where coverage fails, and multiroom sync is less forgiving of a marginal connection than streaming a podcast is. Coverage strategy for these floor plans is in mesh networks for larger lots.
  • THE SYSTEM IS A PLATFORM. Wireless multiroom means a manufacturer's app, an account, and a software lifecycle you do not control. Speakers physically outlast software support by a wide margin, which is the concern set out in when the app outlives its company. Prefer systems that also accept a plain physical input, so an abandoned platform leaves you with speakers rather than furniture.
  • SPEAKERS ARE VISIBLE OBJECTS. That is a decor question, and in period rooms it is not a small one.

The wired path, and what it means in this housing stock

In-ceiling or in-wall speakers driven by a central amplifier remain the better result: nothing visible, no outlet needed at each location, no per-room platform dependency, and a system that behaves like part of the house rather than a set of appliances.

The cost is the walls, and here the local construction matters.

PLASTER AND LATH is the first obstacle. Pre-war and some early post-war houses have plaster over wood lath, which does not cut cleanly, does not patch invisibly, and is heavy and brittle in ways drywall is not. Fishing cable through it is slower and messier than through drywall, and a speaker cutout in a plaster ceiling is a plaster repair as much as an audio install.

FIRE BLOCKING AND FRAMING is the second. Older framing frequently includes horizontal blocking that stops a wire pull dead partway down a wall cavity, which is why an installer's estimate can change once they get into the space.

ATTIC AND CRAWL ACCESS is what determines feasibility more than anything else. A house with a walkable attic over the main rooms is a straightforward job. A low-slope roof with almost no attic volume, or a converted space with no access above, turns the same job into surgery.

The sensible sequencing rule: WIRE WHEN THE WALLS ARE ALREADY OPEN. If a kitchen or bath remodel is happening, pulling speaker cable and a couple of network runs at the same time costs a fraction of doing it later, and this is the same logic that applies to every other in-wall system. If nothing is open, the wireless path is usually the honest answer.

Where the electronics live

A wired system needs a home for the amplifier and the source equipment, and this decision is made badly more often than the speaker placement is.

Requirements are unglamorous: VENTILATION, because amplifiers make heat and a sealed cabinet shortens their life; POWER on a circuit that is not already carrying the kitchen; a WIRED NETWORK CONNECTION if at all possible; and ACCESS, because equipment behind a permanently installed cabinet panel will not be serviced. A hall closet with a vent is better than a beautiful millwork cabinet with no airflow.

Avoid the garage in this climate unless it is conditioned. Summer heat in an uninsulated detached garage is hard on electronics, and that is where a lot of equipment ends up by default.

Restraint, specifically for period rooms

Audio in every room reads as thoroughness on a plan and as clutter in a house. Three or four zones -- the main living space, the kitchen, the primary bedroom, the patio -- covers what most households actually use, and it leaves the remaining rooms free of ceiling cutouts.

In houses with real architectural character, the less visible the better, which is the whole argument in smart tech in historic Claremont homes. Ceiling speakers with paintable trim disappear. Wall boxes and visible runs do not. If a room's ceiling is original plaster with a coved detail, think hard before cutting into it, because that detail is part of the house's value and a speaker is not.

Outdoor audio deserves one specific caution: sound carries between lots here, and a patio system aimed at a neighbor's bedroom window is a neighbor problem long before it is an audio problem. Aim speakers back toward the house, not outward across the property line.

What happens at closing

The split is usually clean and worth stating in the listing rather than leaving to assumption.

IN-CEILING AND IN-WALL SPEAKERS, the cable, the volume controls and any built-in rack generally read as fixtures and stay with the house. FREESTANDING WIRELESS SPEAKERS are personal property and generally go with the seller. The amplifier is the ambiguous one: if it is racked and wired into the house it usually stays, and if it is a component on a shelf it usually does not. Whatever the arrangement, put it in the agreement, because a buyer who expected working ceiling speakers and inherits dead wires with no amplifier is a walkthrough dispute waiting to happen.

The account side follows the same rule as every connected device: reset each speaker, remove it from the seller's account and hand over the app access, or the buyer inherits hardware they cannot control. That checklist is in what conveys and what transfers.

The short version

Wireless for most houses, wired when the walls are already open. Respect the plaster. Give the electronics air and access. Cover four rooms, not nine. Aim outdoor speakers inward. And decide in writing which parts of the system belong to the house before anyone signs anything.
