Inverters Fail First: Planning the Replacement on a Claremont Roof

The inverter is usually the first major service event in a solar system's life. What Claremont owners and buyers should know about warranty and timing.

Panels outlast almost everything else in a solar installation. The inverter does not. It is the component that converts what the array produces into power the house and the grid can use, it runs whenever the sun is up, it carries heat, and it typically holds a shorter warranty than the panels above it. In most systems, the inverter is the first significant service event in the installation's life.

Owners are frequently surprised by this, and buyers inheriting a system almost always are, because nobody sold them a system. They bought a house that came with one.

What the inverter does and where it lives

Solar panels produce direct current. Households and the grid run on alternating current. The inverter performs that conversion, and it also handles the safety function of disconnecting from the grid during an outage.

Installations do this in different ways, and which one a house has changes the replacement conversation. A STRING INVERTER is a single box, usually mounted on a wall near the electrical panel or in the garage, handling the whole array. MICROINVERTERS are small units mounted under each panel on the roof. A HYBRID or storage-capable inverter adds battery handling to the same job. There are other configurations. Establish which one the house has before assuming anything about what a replacement looks like, because a wall-mounted box and a device under a panel on a second-storey roof are different jobs entirely.

Warranty terms are the first thing to check

Inverter warranties commonly run shorter than panel warranties. That gap is not a defect in the product; it is a description of the equipment's expected service life. The buyer's question and the owner's question are the same: how long is the coverage, when did it start, what does it actually cover, and does it follow the equipment to a new owner.

Coverage scope matters as much as duration. A warranty that replaces the PART is a different thing from one that also covers the LABOUR to install the replacement, and different again from one that addresses lost production while the system is down. Read the specific terms rather than assuming, and confirm current status with the manufacturer, since companies merge, exit, and change support arrangements.

Extended coverage is sometimes sold separately at installation and sometimes bundled into a third-party agreement. If the system is leased or on a services contract, maintenance responsibility usually sits with the provider rather than the homeowner, which is one of the genuine advantages of that structure and is worth confirming in the contract language rather than assuming. How an owner knows something is wrong

Usually by not knowing at all, which is the problem. An inverter that has stopped working does not make noise, leak, or announce itself. The house simply buys more electricity from the grid, and unless someone is watching, that shows up months later as a bill that seems high.

The signals worth watching are the monitoring platform, which typically reports faults and shows production dropping to nothing; the inverter's own indicator lights or display, which report error codes; and the utility bill, read against the same month in prior years. A homeowner who checks monitoring occasionally will catch a fault in days. One who never logs in will catch it in seasons.

This is also why monitoring access is worth transferring properly at a sale. A buyer with no login has no visibility into the equipment they now own.

The access question people forget

Replacing a wall-mounted string inverter is straightforward work for a qualified contractor. Replacing microinverters means going onto the roof and lifting panels, which means racking work, roof penetrations disturbed, and a roofing consideration attached to what looked like an electrical job.

That is the practical argument for thinking about the roof and the array as one system rather than two. If a roof is approaching replacement and inverter work is also foreseeable, sequencing the two together avoids paying twice to get panels off and back on.

Permits and the paper trail

Replacing an inverter is electrical work on a grid-connected system. Whether a particular replacement requires a permit, an inspection, or notice to the utility depends on the scope of the work and on current local requirements, and those are questions for the City of Claremont building department and for the utility rather than for an article or a salesperson. What is universally true is that the replacement should be documented: what was installed, when, by whom, under what warranty, and with whatever approvals applied.

That documentation becomes part of the file the next buyer will ask for. A system with a clean record of its own service history is materially easier to sell than one where the current owner cannot say what is on the wall or when it got there.

Who does the work

For a BUYER: establish the inverter type, its age, its warranty status, and the production record, and treat an inverter near the end of its coverage as a foreseeable maintenance item to be priced during the investigation period rather than argued about afterwards.
