Roof replacement is the version of this problem everyone knows about. A remodel is the version that catches people out, because the array is rarely part of the conversation until the plans are already drawn.
An addition, a second story, a new roof plane, a dormer, a relocated chimney or a set of skylights can all put construction into the space an array occupies. Sometimes the panels have to come off temporarily. Sometimes they cannot go back where they were at all.
The decision point is early, and almost nobody treats it that way.
Three different outcomes
Establish which one you are facing before pricing anything.
REMOVE AND REINSTATE. The array comes off, the work happens, the array goes back on the same planes in roughly the same configuration. The cost is labor, scheduling and the coordination of two trades.
RELOCATE. The original planes no longer exist or are no longer suitable, so the array is redesigned onto different surfaces. This is not a reinstallation, it is a new layout, and the production it delivers afterwards may not match what it delivered before.
REDUCE OR REPLACE. Sometimes the new roof simply cannot carry the same array, or equipment old enough to be near replacement anyway makes reinstalling it a poor investment. That is a genuine option, not a failure.
The consent question comes first
Where the equipment is not owned outright, the homeowner does not get to decide who touches it.
Agreements commonly specify that the provider or its authorized contractor must handle the equipment, and they frequently set out what removal and reinstallation involves, who arranges it and who pays for it. Some contemplate this scenario explicitly. Some do not, which is its own problem.
Read the agreement for those terms before hiring anybody, in the manner set out in the lease reading guide. Then get the provider's requirements and its timeline in writing, because a provider's scheduling is not going to bend around a general contractor's framing date.
An owner who has a contractor remove third-party equipment without authorization has potentially breached an agreement and voided coverage on hardware that is not theirs. That is an expensive way to save a phone call.
The structure underneath
An array is a load, and it is a load with wind uplift considerations. New framing has to be designed to carry it, and existing framing that carried it before may be altered by the work.
This belongs in the plans, not in a conversation with the roofer at the end. If the design professional preparing the remodel drawings does not know an array is going back on, they have designed for a roof that is not the roof you intend to have.
The roof covering matters too. If the remodel changes the covering, the existing mounting hardware may not be compatible with the new material, and mounting into a new covering has its own warranty implications for both the roof and the array.
The shade you build yourself
Here is the one that genuinely surprises people.
A second story, a raised roofline or a new volume can shade the remaining array for part of the day. The owner spends money on a remodel and quietly reduces the output of equipment they already own, and nobody notices until a season's worth of production has gone missing.
Ask the question during design, when the massing is still on paper and the geometry can be checked. Shading from a structure is at least predictable, which makes it exactly the sort of thing that can be evaluated in advance rather than discovered.
Capacity, load and the service
A remodel usually adds electrical load. More rooms, more equipment, sometimes new appliances, sometimes a charger.
That runs into the same constraint described in the solar readiness guide: the home's electrical service has a capacity, and a project that both enlarges the house and reintroduces generation may require the service to be revisited.
It is far cheaper to address that as part of a project that already has open walls, a permit and an electrician on site than to discover it as a separate job afterwards.
Tell the utility
If the system's configuration or capacity changes, that is a change to what the utility approved.
An array that comes off and goes back identically is one situation. An array redesigned onto different planes, reduced in size or expanded during the work is another, and it may require an amendment to the interconnection record. Ask the utility what a proposed change requires before the work, and keep whatever they issue with the rest of the file.
Sequencing and budget
Two practical rules.
DECIDE BEFORE FRAMING. Every option is cheap on paper and expensive once structure exists. The array's fate should be settled while the drawings are being made, not when the contractor is looking at panels in the way.
PUT IT IN THE BUDGET AS ITS OWN LINE. Removal, safe storage, reinstallation, any redesign, any new mounting hardware, and the utility and permitting steps. Owners routinely omit all of it and then absorb it as an overrun, which makes it feel like a surprise when it was entirely foreseeable.
If a re-roof is also on the horizon, do it inside the same project. The array is already coming off. Paying to remove it twice is the outcome the roof timing guide exists to prevent.
