Ask ten Claremont owners about insulation and most will describe a single product going into a single place: batts in an attic. The order of operations
First, AIR SEAL. Before anything is added to the attic, the ceiling plane gets sealed: penetrations closed, the attic hatch weatherstripped, gaps at the tops of walls and around chases addressed. Sealing is cheaper than insulating and makes the insulation that follows actually work. It is also the step most often skipped, because it is invisible when finished and no product name attaches to it.
Second, ADDRESS THE DUCTS. If the heating and cooling ducts run through the attic — as they do in most Claremont mid-century houses — they are the highest-value target in the building. Leaking ducts pull superheated attic air into the system and push conditioned air into the attic, which is a loss on both ends. Sealing and properly insulating duct runs frequently produces more comfort than any amount of loose fill on the ceiling.

What does not do much
A few well-marketed items deserve honest framing. Radiant barriers can help in the right assembly and are not a substitute for insulation or sealing. And any product sold on a single dramatic claim, without reference to your ceiling plane, your ducts and your windows, is being sold as a category rather than a repair.
How to have the conversation
An insulation contractor worth hiring will go into the attic before quoting, will talk about air sealing and ducts before talking about product, and will note the wiring, the ventilation and any existing moisture staining. Ask what will be sealed, what will be added, how the depth will be verified across the whole attic, and how the attic hatch and any recessed fixtures will be handled. Ask whether an energy assessment makes sense first — a professional assessment identifies which of the three mechanisms is actually costing you, which is the difference between spending and fixing.
