Windows: Repair or Replace in a Claremont Classic?

Few decisions divide owners of older Claremont homes as cleanly as the window question. One camp sees single glazing, sticking sashes and summer heat and reaches for a replacement quote. The other sees old-growth wood, wavy glass and a facade whose proportions were designed around those exact openings, and reaches for a restoration carpenter. Both camps have a point, and the reason the argument never settles is that it is usually being had in the abstract rather than about a particular window in a particular wall.
