Nobody moves for the paperwork, and nobody plans for it either. Then the boxes are in the house, you are tired, and it turns out that half of it has deadlines, several items depend on each other, and one of them needs a document that is still in a shipping container.
This is the sequence, in the order that actually works. I am deliberately not printing deadlines, fees or document checklists, because those change and the agencies publish the current versions. Treat every item below as a pointer to the authoritative source rather than as the source itself.
Do this before you leave the old place
Two things save the most pain later, and both have to happen while you still have access to your old life.
Gather identity documents into one physical folder that travels with you, not with the movers. Birth certificates, passports, marriage or name-change documents, Social Security cards, current licenses and titles, school records, immunization records, pet records. Almost every California agency will ask for something from that list, and the single most common delay I see is a document sitting in a box on a truck.
Set up mail forwarding early. It is imperfect and it lags, so also make a list of the accounts that must be told directly: banks, insurers, employers, brokerages, the IRS, subscriptions, and anything that mails a document you cannot replace easily.
Week one: the house works
Utilities and services first, because everything else is easier from a functioning house. Electricity, gas, water and trash, internet, and any city services tied to the address. Internet in particular should have been verified at the address before you closed rather than after. The utilities setup guide covers the account-opening order and the traps.
Week one to two: driver license and vehicles
If you are arriving from out of state, this is the item with a real clock on it, and the rules for both your driver license and your vehicle registration are set by the California DMV. Deadlines, required documents, testing requirements, smog certification and fees all change, so get the current answer from the DMV directly rather than from any article, including this one.
The practical advice that does not expire: make the appointment before you think you need it, because availability is the constraint far more often than the paperwork is. Bring more documentation than you believe is required. And handle vehicle registration and the license as two related but separate errands, since one can stall the other.
Newcomers from another state should also read the California basics for newcomers, which covers the wider set of things that work differently here.
Week two: voter registration
Register at your new address through the California Secretary of State's system or Los Angeles County's registrar. It is quick, it is often bundled with a DMV transaction, and it is the item people most reliably forget until an election is close.
Local elections matter more than newcomers expect in a town this size. Planning decisions, tree policy and school board choices are decided by a small number of votes.
Before the term starts: school enrollment
This one deserves its own lead time, because it is the item most likely to depend on documents you cannot produce quickly.
Enrollment, required paperwork, immunization requirements and attendance boundaries are all handled by Claremont Unified School District, and you should confirm everything with the district directly. Attendance boundaries change, and a listing, a website or an article is not an authoritative source for which school an address feeds. If a specific school assignment is part of why you chose a house, verify it with the district BEFORE your offer depends on it, not after you have moved in.
Expect to need proof of residency at the new address, birth documentation and immunization records. That last one is the classic delay, especially for a family arriving from another country or another state with a different record system.
Pets
Dog licensing is a city-level requirement and rabies vaccination documentation is usually part of it. Confirm the current process and requirements with the City of Claremont. Update your microchip registration with the new address the same week, because a chip pointing at a house two thousand miles away helps nobody. If you are arriving with a dog, the dog owner's relocation guide covers the rest.
The rest of the first month
- Health coverage and providers. Confirm with your insurer that your plan works here and find providers accepting new patients before you need one urgently.
- Banking. If your bank has no local presence, opening something local is worth the hour.
- Home-based business. If you will run a business from the house, check the City of Claremont's requirements. A home occupation permit or business license may apply, and this is not something to assume.
- Property tax and exemptions. New owners should confirm parcel details and any applicable exemptions with the Los Angeles County Assessor. Deadlines exist and they are easy to miss in a moving year.
- Insurance. Homeowner and auto coverage should be in place before you need them, and homeowner quotes here should always be run on the specific address.
The order matters more than the speed
Most of the delays I watch people hit are dependency problems, not effort problems. The license appointment needs a proof of residency you have not received. The school needs an immunization record in a box. The utility account needs a document from the closing.
So front-load the document folder, book the appointments early, and do the school and pet items on their own timeline rather than at the end of the list.
The relocation hub holds the rest of the sequence, and the 90-day plan places all of this on an actual calendar alongside the house itself.

Frequently asked questions
How soon do I need a California driver license after moving?
There is a real deadline, and it is set by the California DMV rather than by the city. Because requirements, documents and timelines change, confirm the current rules directly with the DMV and book an appointment earlier than you think you need to, since availability is usually the constraint.
How do I enroll my child in school here?
Enrollment, required documents, immunization requirements and attendance boundaries are handled by Claremont Unified School District. Confirm everything directly with the district, and verify a specific school assignment before an offer depends on it, since boundaries change and listings are not authoritative.
What paperwork should I hand-carry rather than ship?
Birth certificates, passports, marriage or name-change documents, Social Security cards, licenses and titles, school records, immunization records and pet records. The most common delay is a required document sitting in a moving container.
Do I need to license my dog in Claremont?
Dog licensing is handled at the city level and rabies documentation is normally part of it. Confirm the current process with the City of Claremont, and update your microchip registration to the new address in the same week.
What do new homeowners need to do about property taxes?
Confirm parcel details and any exemptions you may qualify for with the Los Angeles County Assessor. Deadlines apply and they are easy to miss during a move, so treat it as a first-month item rather than a later one.
