When the Stairs Become the Problem in a Two-Story Claremont Home

  • Continuous rails that return at the ends. A rail that stops short of the last step stops helping exactly where it is needed.

  • Lighting at both ends, on a switch at both ends. Obvious, frequently absent.
  • Surface. Loose runners, worn carpet edges, and polished hardwood in socks are all fixable.

A household that has not done these has not really tested whether the staircase is the problem. Many find that it was not.

Option two: move life downstairs

The most common real-world solution, and it works far more often than people expect.

The question is whether the ground floor can host a full daily life: a place to sleep, a full or three-quarter bathroom, and reasonable access to the kitchen and the door. If a house has a downstairs bedroom and bath already, this is mostly a matter of deciding to do it. If it has a downstairs powder room only, adding a shower to it is a defined, bounded project.

Option four: a residential elevator or platform lift

The comprehensive answer, and the expensive, disruptive one. It requires a shaft or a suitable stacked space — often aligned closets — plus structural work, permits, and ongoing maintenance. Platform lifts are a smaller-scale relative, useful for short rises rather than a full floor.

For a household committed to a specific two-story home for the long term, and where a wheelchair is or will be in the picture, this is sometimes the right call. For most households it is more machine than the problem requires.
