Exterior paint is the cheapest weatherproofing a house has, and it is the one most often treated as decoration.
On a Claremont house, the coating is a sacrificial layer. It takes the ultraviolet load, the thermal cycling and the wind-driven grit so the substrate underneath does not. What the coating is actually doing
Three jobs, in order of importance.

Reading the failure mode
Different failures have different causes, and the cause dictates the fix. Learn the vocabulary and you can describe the problem accurately.
Chalking. Rub a gloved hand on a sunny wall. If it comes away with a fine powder, the binder has broken down at the surface. That is normal ultraviolet aging and it is a recoat signal, not an emergency.
Fading and uneven color. Compare a south or west wall against a shaded north elevation. Sun-facing walls age faster and will always be the first to go. That asymmetry is the reason a whole-house recoat and a single-elevation recoat are different conversations.
Cracking and alligatoring. A pattern of fine interconnected cracks usually means too many accumulated coats, or a coating that has lost flexibility. It is a prep problem, and painting over it repeats it.

Peeling in one localized area rather than across a wall usually points at a water source: a leaking gutter joint, a sprinkler hitting the wall, a flashing failure above.
Mildew. Dark speckling on shaded, damp elevations, often behind shrubs planted too close. It needs cleaning and a change in conditions, not just a fresh coat.
Substrates behave differently
Claremont has stucco, wood siding, wood trim, fiber cement, metal and masonry, frequently on the same house.
Stucco is a cementitious surface with its own crack behavior, and coating it is a different task from coating wood - including the question of whether a hairline crack is cosmetic or structural. Prep is the job
The visible part of painting is application. The part that decides the outcome is everything before it.
Washing removes the chalk, dust and mildew that block adhesion. Scraping and sanding remove the failed coating and feather the edges so the repair does not read as a patch. Repairs replace the rot rather than encapsulating it. Priming gives the new coating something to bond to, and bare wood, bare metal and patched stucco all want the correct primer rather than a general one.
Then sealants. Every joint where two different materials meet - siding to trim, trim to stucco, window frame to wall - is a designed movement joint, and the sealant in it is consumable. Old sealant goes hard, shrinks and pulls away at one edge. Replacing it is the single highest-value part of a repaint, because that is where water actually gets in.
What does NOT belong in the sealant conversation is the roof-to-wall flashing. Sealant is not a substitute for metal, and a bead of caulk at a roof intersection hides a problem rather than solving it.
Conditions and constraints
Coatings have application windows defined by surface temperature and humidity, and those windows are on the product label rather than in a general article. A wall in direct afternoon sun in an inland valley can be far hotter than the air, which affects how a coating flows and cures.
The practical version: work the shaded elevations, follow the manufacturer's stated limits, and be skeptical of anyone who wants to spray a hot wall to finish a day.
Two other constraints are worth naming. Older homes may contain lead-based coatings, and disturbing them has legal and safety requirements that route to a certified professional rather than a weekend. And exterior work in a historic district or under an association can carry approval requirements - confirm with the City of Claremont or your association before choosing a color, not after.

Record the manufacturer, product line, sheen and exact color codes for body, trim and accent, plus the date and who did the work. Keep a labeled leftover container for touch-ups.
