Trapping without exclusion is a subscription. The animals you remove get replaced, because the thing that attracted them was never the animal - it was an opening.

How you know something is up there
The signals arrive in a rough order.
Sound, with a time signature. Scratching and scurrying after dark generally means rodents. Heavier thumping, dragging or a slow deliberate footfall, often at dusk or before dawn, suggests something larger. Daytime activity in a wall cavity in spring can mean a nesting bird or a denning animal with young, which changes the entire approach.
Smell. A persistent ammonia or musky odor that does not clear with ventilation, or a strong odor that appears suddenly and then fades over weeks, both point at the attic. The general vocabulary for reading household odors is in the smells and signals decoder.
Evidence at the perimeter. Rub marks along a rafter or a beam edge, disturbed or flattened insulation, chewed cardboard, droppings, or a trail of debris where an animal repeatedly travels the same route.
Something in the wrong place. Insulation in the yard beneath an eave, a screen bent outward at a vent, or a ceiling stain with no plumbing above it.
Look with a strong flashlight from the attic hatch. Do not crawl across an unfloored attic; the ceiling below is not a walking surface, and older attics can hold wiring, sharp fasteners and materials that should not be disturbed.
The openings that actually get used
Rodents need a surprisingly small gap, and everything else needs a compromised cover somewhere. The recurring entry points on Claremont houses are these.
Roof and eave junctions. Where a lower roof meets a wall, and where rafter tails meet the fascia, there are frequently gaps that opened as framing dried and settled.
Vents. Gable, eave, ridge, dormer and roof-mounted vents are designed openings with screening over them, and the screening is the part that fails. Torn mesh, a screen pushed loose at one corner, or a vent damaged by weather is a doorway. Utility penetrations. Every pipe, conduit, cable and refrigerant line that passes through the envelope leaves an annular gap that was supposed to be sealed and often was not.

The bridge from the yard
Access is half the story. Most attic intrusions start with a route.
Tree limbs that overhang or touch the roof are the primary highway, and they are also abrading the covering and dropping debris into the gutters - two reasons to keep them clear, both covered in the canopy guide. Trimming a mature tree properly is arborist work; topping it creates a worse tree and a worse roof problem later.
Then there are the attractants. Fallen fruit left on the ground, accessible pet food, unsecured refuse containers, bird feeders, and dense ground cover against the foundation all raise the population that then goes looking for a cavity. Water is an attractant too, which is another argument for fixing the leaking hose bib you have been ignoring.
What the damage actually is
The mess is the least of it.
Rodents gnaw, and wiring insulation is a target. Chewed wiring is a fire risk and it is not always visible from the hatch. Any suspicion of damaged wiring goes to a licensed electrician, and the related panel and circuit questions are in the electrical panel guide.
Insulation gets compressed, tunneled and contaminated, and it stops performing - which raises cooling load in a place with hot summers, as described in the insulation guide.
Ductwork gets torn, which dumps conditioned air into the attic and pulls attic air into the house. Stored belongings get ruined. And droppings and nesting material create a genuine health concern, which is the reason cleanup is not a broom-and-shop-vac job.
Where the line is
Here is the honest boundary. Owners can inspect from safe positions, keep the yard from feeding the problem, keep the canopy off the roof, and repair simple accessible exterior gaps.
Everything else routes out. Contaminated insulation removal and attic sanitation involve airborne health hazards and require proper protective equipment and containment. Wildlife species in California carry legal protections and seasonal restrictions, and sealing an entry with young inside creates both a welfare problem and a decomposition problem in your ceiling. Roof-level exclusion work is roof work. Suspected wiring damage is electrical work.
So the sequence that works is: identify the openings, confirm nothing is trapped inside, exclude with durable materials appropriate to the location, then clean up, then restore insulation and ducting. Exclusion done with expanding foam or a plastic screen is a delay, not a repair - animals chew through both.
The bottom line
Seal the building or repeat the problem. Inspect at the vents, the eave and roof junctions, the exhaust hoods, the utility penetrations, the chimney and the crawl space. Cut the canopy bridge and remove the food. Repair vents as vents rather than blocking them. And route health, wildlife, roof and electrical work to the qualified trades.

Why does trapping alone never solve an attic rodent problem?
Because the opening remains. Removing animals without sealing the entry points simply frees the space for the next ones, and the population outside is renewed constantly. Exclusion - finding and durably closing every gap in the envelope - is the actual repair, and trapping is the step that empties the space before you close it.
Where do animals usually get into a Claremont attic?
